About 

Haolun Zhang is a Chinese countertenor distinguished for his luminous timbre, expressive artistry, and compelling stage presence.

 

In the 2025–2026 season, Haolun was awarded First Prize in both the Western Region and the Los Angeles District of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition. He is also the winner of the William Gammon Henry Concerto Competition and has received top prizes in several international vocal competitions.

 

Recent and upcoming engagements include Ruggiero in Handel’s Alcina, Hansel in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel with Opera Arlington, Prince Orlofsky in Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, and Ottone in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea. On the concert stage, he has appeared as alto soloist in Handel’s Messiah with the Dallas Bach Society, where he made his debut at the Meyerson Symphony Center in 2025. He also made his debut at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall in 2024 as part of the Chinese Young Artist Showcase Concert.

 

With a repertoire spanning Baroque, contemporary opera, and operetta, Haolun brings a refined musical sensitivity and a deeply personal approach to storytelling, connecting with audiences through sincerity, clarity, and emotional truth.

 

Originally from China, Haolun is a doctoral candidate in Voice Performance at the University of North Texas. He holds a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor of Music degree from the Xinghai Conservatory of Music.
